The Washburn Water Tower is one of Tangletown’s most notable landmarks. Some of its neighbors have asked, within the City of Minneapolis, which department is responsible for the Washburn Water Tower’s repair and maintenance? What are the plans and timeline to address the concrete deterioration that was found on the tower previously?
The City Water Treatment and Distribution Department of Public Works is responsible for the Washburn Water Tower’s maintenance. The repair and restoration of the tower is still planned for 2025 with construction tentatively starting in May or June. The work includes concrete repairs to the exterior of the tower to address concrete spalling that was observed in previous years. The work will also include some cleaning and interior access upgrades.
The project is currently in bidding for prospective contractors; more information will be shared once the timeline is finalized with the successful contractor. Once the work is complete, access to the garden area at the base of the tower will resume.
