Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture

This month’s Equity Resource,  Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture by Virginia Sole-Smith, comes from Tangletown resident and Equity Committee member Ian:

“Sole-Smith examines the unhealthy ways our culture views folks with different body sizes. The book works on reclaiming the word “fat” and disconnecting it from words like “unhealthy,” “inactive,” and “lazy.”

This is an important book to read to be a well-rounded student of equity. Equity of body shapes, especially when many Minneapolitans come from cultures where slimness is the norm. Slimness is not normal for everyone and won’t ever be for everyone.

Sole-Smith also has a podcast and newsletter called “Burnt Toast” but they do have paywalls. She was also on Fresh Air, “Dismantling Anti-Fat Bias.”
