“On the heels of the government shutdown, with the uncertainty around the SNAP and WIC programs, the gutting of USAID earlier this year, and the generally rising costs at the grocery store, the equity committee has been discussing food insecurity. As we enter the holidays, where many of us will be fortunate enough to gather with friends and families to make and share meals, we thought it salient to consider the topic of food this month. Andrea Freeman’s book, Ruin Their Crops on the Ground, examines “food oppression” looking at the historic and political relationship between the US government, industry, and marginalized groups, and the associated racial health disparities.
